In a previous blog post, we discussed about Domino Domain Monitoring, or DDM, and how it can ease the management of your Domino servers, make it more efficient and make your users more happy. It's a great tool in this regard, and helps you, as a domino administrator, with the day-to-day management of your servers.
But what if there is a problem ? What is there for times of crisis ?
When the situation gets critical, your best friend is the alerting system that is included with Domino. Again, it's a very powerful tool that comes together with your domino server, free of charge and that is, unfortunately, very often not configured.
What does it do ?
It continuously checks the status of various components of your domino domain, such as
Database availability, access permissions, usage. (Is it available ? Should it be compacted ?)
Server status. (Is it online ?)
- The status of a specific task, such as mail routing, database replication, etc. (Is it running ? Is it stalled ?)
- The number of emails waiting to be routed.
- The number of users connected to the servers.
- The availability level of your servers.
- And much more...
When, at any time, a component reaches a critical status, like
- A critical application becomes unavailable.
- A server goes down.
- Emails are not sent anymore.
- The server is too busy.
- A specific error message pops up.
then, the Domino alerting automatically alerts you, either
- by sending a message on your mobile.
- by airing a sound.
- by broadcasting a message over the network.
It can also send a command to the server or an SNMP trap.
What are the benefits ?
You are alerted at the very moment the situation gets critical. You can then act right away, minimize downtime and impact on users. You can even solve the issue before anybody notices it. You also spend less time monitoring the status of your servers, while resting assured that you will be alerted when needed. This is more time to devote to tasks that bring added value to your users. And less stress too. For IT department whose resources are stretched, when there are too few staffs managing too many servers, sometimes over several geographical locations, this is a must.

You might be wondering now: "And what happens when the server doing the monitoring goes down ? Does the whole monitoring system go useless at the same time ?" We also have a solution for this ! Please check our monitoring services.
