How SmartDrive ‘unlocks’ the CryptoLock

CryptoWhat?

Well at first we need to take a quick look at how most cryptolockers work... To put it to a very (very) general and basic level: a Cryptolocker takes a file and encrypts it. It is nearly impossible to retrieve the files you ‘lost’ except if you pay a certain amount of money to the hacker.

SmartDrive will help!

For our readers who don’t know SmartDrive, SmartDrive is EASI’s professional alternative to services like DropBox & GoogleDrive, running on Cloud2be.

Imagine you don’t have SmartDrive

An environment has an infected user, the cryptovirus has been active for a couple of hours. It has encrypted 200 files. Until now the only real solution was to find the backup of the machine, and restore it. Often a very time consuming job and it is not guaranteed that the last small modifications to the file were backed-up...

Now imagine you were using SmartDrive

Your environment has an infected user, the cryptovirus also has been running for a couple of hours and has encoded multiple files. How can I resolve this issue? Well in fact, you login to the SmartDrive portal, and a couple of clicks later, every file is restored. Effectively reducing the time from a couple of hours to a couple of minutes! This way drastically reducing your RTO and decreasing your RPO.

How is this possible?!

SmartDrive offers a feature that is called ‘Versioning’. For example: you have a Word file which is saved onto SmartDrive, this will be V1. You work on it and save it again, this will be V2. And so on… As this is exactly what a cryptovirus will do (edit a file and save it again), so it will just create a V3 of the file. With a couple of clicks you can easily revert to a previous (unencrypted version) of the file!
