Most of you think that your data are perfectly saved and can be restored easily... For some of you, they are, but sometimes, unpredictable events occur.
Let me tell you a few anecdotes that we, at EASI, have already encountered...
- The IT manager of a customer was doing a great job with his backups. He tested them regularly and even fully restored them. They were held in a brand new fire-safe box. One day, there were some works going on in the building next to his company. The crane felt precisely on the IT room of our customer and everything was destroyed, even de brand new safe.
- Another similar story: a client was also storing his backups in a safe box. One day, his servers went down and he needed to restore everything but nothing happened. After some research, it appeared that during works in the street, the workers used a huge magnet. It was was so strong that it demagnetised all the tapes and so the data on it were deleted.
- In order to please the management committee, a client decided to conduct a Backup Restore Test even if he was sure that his backups were done efficiently. After the restore he noticed that nothing worked. After days of investigation it appeared that the problem was linked to the serial number specific to their servers. Just because of that, he couldn't restart his infrastructure!
The aim of this post is not to tell you to be vigilant in case of works close to your company. It is to highlight the fact that you can't play with the security of your data!
They were all convinced that their data were well protected but at the end of the day, they all had to deal with an awkward situation.
