Step 3: The Journey to a Secure Environment

Step 3: Protect your Virtual Machines from the Hyper-Visor. In legacy server environments, we install anti-virus agents on the servers. These anti-virus agents need to be upgraded on a regular basis, which often happens only once every 2-3 years.

When new servers get deployed, sometimes the IT admin forgets to install an agent on the server, which results in an unprotected environment. In virtual environments, we can protect the virtual machines from within the hypervisor. There is no more need to install & manage agents on the servers. It is done on the underneath layer.

The advantage of this is that there is less administrative overhead and less prone to human error. When a new server gets deployed on the environment, it is automatically protected. Especially in Virtual Desktops Environments (VDI), where desktops are being re-deployed on a regular basis, this is very useful and time-saving. The second advantage is this antivirus uses a lot less resources on the environment. The integration with vCenter is done via the VMware NSX Manager. The anti-virus protection from within the hypervisor is supported by the major Antivirus Vendors. EASI has very good experience with Eset Nod32 & TrendMicro.
