DRP for Disaster Recovery Plan. This refers to how an organization plans to deal with potential disasters. It concerns a lot of aspects of a company: emergency process, fire alarm, evacuation of the building, anti-intrusion system,… But this may also speak to you if your company works with IT databases. And we are sure it is. In that case, you have to make a DRP.

The objective is to plan the recovery of the IT infrastructure as quick as possible and to allow a switch to an alternative infrastructure in case of crash. Never mind the cause, this could have catastrophic consequences on your business: dataloss, can’t work for hours, … The aim of a DRP is to minimize the loss or the inconvenience for your business. In function of your objectives and needs, the Disaster Recovery Plan can be more or less complex. This begins then with an analysis of the processes and needs of the company.

Here are 2 concrete schemes that show what is a DRP :

  • The DRP will have an impact on the Recovery Time Objective and is important to determinate the elapsed time between the crash and the moment you will be able to resume your work.

  • The DRP becomes active as soon as the infrastructure on which you are working faces an issue. The DRP switches on an alternative infrastructure (that can be provided by an external company) to allow the data recovery thanks to frequent backups. This operation can be treated manually or virtually depending on the installation.
