Another page in Microsoft’s 2026 licensing story has just been turned.
Over the past months, we have already explored several important changes in Microsoft’s licensing landscape:
-
Starting in December, when we observed the trends and early signals of what was going to shape Microsoft's ecosystem for the years to come.
-
Then in January, we took a deep dive into the upcoming July 2026 price changes, as well as the advantages of bundling licenses under a single SKU, which can save organizations more than 11% on average on licensing investments.
-
Most recently, last month, we also shared the news about the temporary reduction on Microsoft 365 list prices (7.4% on average), creating a short window of opportunity for companies looking to further optimise their licensing strategy.
Beyond changes in pricing, another message was very clear: Microsoft 365 is evolving into a strategic AI platform, where Copilot is becoming an integral part of the modern workplace.
Today, Microsoft confirms another major step in that evolution with the introduction of the widely anticipated Microsoft 365 E7: The Frontier Suite. This brings a new licensing model built around AI that combines Copilot, AI agents, and advanced security capabilities into one premium bundle.
Key takeaways
|
1. What is Microsoft 365 E7?
Microsoft 365 E7: The Frontier Suite is Microsoft’s AI-first enterprise suite, designed for organizations that want to integrate AI deeply into their operations.
While previous Microsoft 365 licenses were built primarily around human users, E7 reflects a new reality: organizations increasingly rely on AI systems to perform tasks, analyse data and automate workflows.
These AI agents operate alongside employees and interact with corporate systems. As a result, they require the same level of governance, identity management and security as human users.
Microsoft 365 E7 provides the platform to manage human employees and digital workers within the same secure environment.
2. What’s included in Microsoft 365 E7?
Microsoft 365 E7 combines several key capabilities into a single enterprise license.
2.1. Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft 365 Copilot is fully integrated into the E7 suite.
Copilot assists employees with tasks such as writing, summarising information, generating insights and automating workflows across applications like Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
By embedding Copilot directly in the license, Microsoft reinforces its strategy of making AI a core component of the workplace rather than a separate add-on.
2.2. Agent 365: managing AI agents
One of the most important innovations in E7 is Agent 365, a management framework designed for enterprise AI agents.
While Copilot assists users with their daily tasks, Agent 365 introduces a new model where AI agents can autonomously execute business processes.
According to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, the future of work will not only involve AI assistants helping users with tasks, but also agents capable of executing complex workflows on behalf of employees.
Agent 365 allows organizations to:
✔️ deploy AI agents across workflows✔️ manage their permissions and identities
✔️ monitor their activity and performance
✔️ control their life cycle and governance
In practice, this means AI agents can access systems, execute tasks and interact with company data while remaining fully governed and secure.
Agent 365 will be generally available on May 1 and priced at approximately $15 per user per month, potentially combined with usage-based costs depending on the complexity and value of specific agents.
2.3. Expanded identity governance with Microsoft Entra
Microsoft 365 E7 expands the capabilities of Microsoft Entra, Microsoft’s identity and access management platform.
Organizations gain advanced tools for:
✔️ Identity governance✔️ Privileged access management
✔️ life cycle management of users and agents
These capabilities ensure that both employees and AI agents operate within clearly defined security and access policies.
2.4. Unified security and compliance
Security and governance play a central role in the E7 platform.
Microsoft combines capabilities from:
📌 Microsoft Defender📌 Microsoft Purview
📌 Microsoft Entra
This integrated framework allows organizations to monitor, secure and audit activity across both human users and AI agents.
In essence, E7 introduces a comprehensive governance layer for an AI-driven workplace.
3. Pricing
Microsoft 365 E7 is priced at $99 per user per month.
This pricing aligns closely with the current cost structure of Microsoft’s enterprise ecosystem:
- Microsoft 365 E5: approximately $60 per user per month
- Microsoft 365 Copilot: approximately $30 per user per month
- Agent 365: approximately $15 per user per month, excluding usage-based costs for specific agents depending on complexity and value.
If bought separately, this would bring the total cost to at least $105 per user per month.
By combining these capabilities together with advanced AI governance tools, Microsoft positions E7 as its most comprehensive enterprise license to date.

4. Why Microsoft is launching E7
The introduction of E7 reflects several broader trends in Microsoft’s strategy.
4.1. Accelerating AI adoption
Although Copilot has gained significant attention, adoption across organizations has been gradual. Integrating AI capabilities directly into enterprise licenses makes it easier for companies to deploy AI across their workforce.
4.2. Preparing for digital workers
Microsoft expects organizations to increasingly deploy AI agents that perform tasks autonomously.
These agents may analyse data, trigger workflows, interact with applications or support employees in decision-making processes. Managing them securely requires governance, identity management and monitoring capabilities.
Microsoft 365 E7 provides the framework to secure and govern this emerging digital workforce.
4.3. Simplifying licensing
Many organizations currently combine several licenses and add-ons, including:
- Microsoft 365 E5
- Copilot
- additional identity governance features
- security extensions
Microsoft 365 E7 simplifies this landscape by consolidating these capabilities into a single premium subscription.
5. How E7 compares to E5
Microsoft 365 E5 remains a powerful enterprise suite, but E7 significantly expands its scope.
| Capability | Microsoft 365 E5 | Microsoft 365 E7 |
|---|---|---|
| Copilot included | No | Yes |
| AI agent management | No | Yes |
| Identity governance | Advanced | Extended |
| Security & compliance | High | Highest |
| Workforce model | Human users | Human users + AI agents |
The main difference is clear:
-
E5 focuses on securing human productivity,
-
while E7 extends governance to both employees and AI systems.
6. When will E7 launch and who it is for?
6.1. When?
Microsoft announced that Microsoft 365 E7: The Frontier Suite will become generally available on May 1.
6.2. For whom?
E7 is the ideal licensing tier for organizations that plan to:
-
Deploy fleets of persistent AI agents
-
Integrate AI deeply into workflows
-
Require strict governance, auditing, and identity controls
- Avoid stacking many expensive add-ons onto E5
If your organisation is moving toward automation, AI-driven workflows and digital labor, Microsoft 365 E7 is likely to become the new reference license in the coming years.
The future workplace: managing humans and AI agents
Microsoft 365 E7: The Frontier Suite is more than just another licensing tier.
It reflects a broader shift in enterprise IT. As organizations deploy AI agents to automate tasks and support employees, they must also ensure these systems are governed, secured and audited.
With Microsoft 365 E7, Microsoft is building the platform that allows organizations to manage human and digital workers within the same secure ecosystem.
For IT leaders, this marks an important milestone: AI is no longer an add-on to the workplace, but it is becoming part of the foundation of enterprise IT.
