Last weeks/months we had a full topic about RPO and RTO.

Those notions are crucial for your Business Continuity and the setup of your Disaster Recovery Plan. It is also important to precise that a disaster doesn't always mean a fire, a hurricane or terrorism. It can also be little daily things such as power failure, hardware failure, network failure, human error,...

The Cost of data loss for your Business

When you want to define your RPO and RTO policy, you also have to take into account the cost of a downtime for your company. This part is most of the time underestimated or unknown in many companies.

A study showed that a downtime costs 6.300€/hour for an average SMB. If you combine this cost with the average number of disasters per year (1,7) and the average duration of an event (2,2 hours), the total cost per year is approximately 23.000 €. Of course those figures are theoretical but they might give you an idea and maybe make you think about the Disaster Recovery Plan for your IT department.

If you can measure it for your company, don't hesitate to do it. It might influence your desired RPO and RTO and help you to define your DRP.

The chart below also show how you should define your ideal solution.
